Cleaning a podcast voice

A clean podcast voice is a chain, not a single magic filter. Order matters.

The chain

High-pass at 80 Hz, gentle noise reduction, de-esser on harsh sibilants, light compression at 2:1, and a limiter to catch peaks. Each stage does a little — that is why the voice survives.

Order matters

De-noise before compression, or the compressor will amplify the noise. De-ess after EQ, or the boost will make sibilants worse.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip de-essing?

Only if the recording is not harsh. If listeners hear sharp S sounds on earbuds, do not skip it.
